Tell me more about ENGR 29600

Gender in the World provides undergraduate students the opportunity to understand the impact of gender in a worldview, and to start thinking about how they can become change-makers with regard to inclusivity.

This course meets once-per-week during the first 8 weeks of the semester. The instructors lead discussions around gender dynamics (the relationship and interactions between and among people, based on gender) in the STEM fields. Students become aware of and discuss solutions for internal and external barriers that prevent women from reaching their greatest potential in the workforce and start their own path toward understanding and implementing inclusivity.

Over spring break, the class will travel abroad to better understand gender dynamics in the world by exploring and immersing in the culture of other countries. They will also visit international engineering feats to gain a broader view of engineering outside of the US.

Individuals of all races, genders, and backgrounds are welcome. Class is held in person on the West Lafayette campus.

What the students have said!

  • This study abroad really inspired me to make history of my own and continue through college, even when it gets difficult. This study abroad had an extremely positive impact on my Purdue experience thus far, and it helped me see the support I have as a woman in engineering at Purdue.
  • This study abroad experience led me to a community of like-minded women in engineering that I feel connected to and supported by.
  • [I] learned so much about other cultures and how they differed from my own. It made me realize I want to keep exploring the world, meeting new people, and immersing in other cultures. It was really inspiring to meet so many different people, and it made me realize how many other perspectives there are out there.
  • Prior to this trip, I never considered living abroad but now, I am considering how I might be able to pursue a graduate degree abroad to further my global experiences.
  • The Women of Paris tour stood out to me and was my favorite as it highlighted significant contributions that women have made throughout history. Although I have traveled before, this was my first time experiencing a tour focused on women and their historical impact. It felt reassuring to know that tours like this exist.
